Captain Marvel Modern Concept

Description

Got hooked into watching the DC showcase animated shorts on the Batman/Superman Apocalypse DVD.

Captain Marvel rocks. Hes always rocked. He been around since Roosevelt, and the story revolving around a well mannered kid given godlike powers still holds a special place in comics today.

So I figured, why not breathe some new life into his iconic garb by updating it to a more modern standard.

Some of my first sketches had him wearing a sort of Roman type of outfit, with a styled type of toga and parts of historically accurate Roman armor. I went in that direction since his powers are derivved from the Greek/Roman pantheon of gods - I felt it appropriate.

I liked the idea, but it was far to complex and bulky to be considered a true superhero costume, so I began the process of subtracting and reducing the design into more symbolic accents.

You can see some aspects of the toga idea in the upper body, with the diagonal cutoff of the bright red. I made sure the costume remained snug as well, but gave certain areas just a bit of raised relief for more interesting subtle detail.

The shin armor from the Roman armor I had on originally was just about axed completely, leaving just a more iconic cross strap/ knee joint detail.

The mantle was left fairly intact from my first sketch. I liked how it was form fitting on the shoulders, but had the loose half-cape along the left armor, just like the classic costume.

The bolt of lighting that pretty much defines Captain Marvel was a tough call. I opted to warp the icon to flow with the rest of the diagonal aspects of the upper boddy red area.

As for the face and body shape. In this day and age, bulky muscle-man physical builds have kinda been tossed to the wayside, in favor of a more lean yet ripped look. Since Billy Batson is a teenager by his mortal standard, I didnt see the need to make his Captain Marvel form that much older.

This was a tough design, considering all of the sketches and redos I went through before I settled on this design. But ultimately I think I did the character proud, bringing his look into the 21st century with style.

"The Shazam has just hit the fan."

What do you all think?
